The Woman In Black by Susan Hill

The Woman In Black is a novel by Susan Hill written in 1983. The novel focuses on the exploits of Arthur Gibb, a solictor from London sent to Eel Marsh house, the estate of a deceased Alice Drablow in order to sort her affairs.
At the funeral of Mrs. Drablow, Mr Gibb witnesses a woman dressed in all black with a terrifyingly decayed face. It becomes clear that the town is repressing a deep rooted fear regarding Mrs Drablow and her estate, as Mr Gibb becomes more and more involved, spending nights at the isolated house as he tries to complete the job, he eventually comes to discover that not only are the hauntings real, but the curse is not confined to the small town.

The novel was written in the early 1980's and yet is reminiscent of earlier victorian gothic literature. The intrigue and twists keep the reader on track, though character development outside of Mr Gibb is sparse. The novel was converted to a stage play and 1987, and is still performed by a cast of 2 at the Fortune Theatre in the West End of London.
